What is the difference between MES & MOM?
The terms Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) are often used interchangeably and define a different functional area for each manufacturing professional.
- Some consider them synonymous and/or interchangeable.
- Some think MES is a subset of MOM.
- Some think we should choose one of them.
- The majority have no opinion.
We will use the term Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) to encompass the ISA-95 Level 3 architecture and functionality, as in the simplified diagram shown in the graphic. This includes extensions or variations on the ISA-95 model.
MOM is also a more comprehensive solution that drives other related operations such as warehouse, transportation, quality and labor. In addition, a complete MOM solution can offer some form of visibility into supply chain operations and "big data" generation to provide decision support in the form of production forecasting.
Thanks to its hardware capability, trex can go down to Level 0 (zero) as it can receive and process data like a PLC when needed, receiving signals from the machine sensor without the need for any extra devices. When software solutions such as quality maintenance modules are also considered, it is a product that exceeds the limits of MES and remains within the boundaries of MOM.
